STAC - TURN THAT LIGHT OUT

Having been thrown out of school at the age of 14 for setting fire to her music teacher (he didn’t meet her unusually high standards) the artist formerly known as Stacey Dowdeswell, somehow managed to wangle a scholarship to the infamous Brit School (an institution that has so far managed to churn out the likes of Amy Winehouse, Kate Nash and Jamie Woone) and her path in life, it seemed, was set.

After graduating, Stac garnered gainful employment in none other than Wah Wah 45s favourite distributors (and possibly the only company of its kind left in the UK at the time of going to press) Kudos Records. It was here that she first came to the attention of MessrsServini and Goss, and after leaving Kudos and enjoying a spate living the drug induced life of a music television producer, things really started to happen for this young lady.

A chance meeting in a kebab shop in Leeds with musical genius Prod led to a fruitful partnership and the creation of such underground hits as Balls Bounce,Tip and (who could forget) the deceptively entitledSure Ain’t Good.

In 2009, Balls Bounce appeared on the Wah Wah 45s compilation Underground Hits & Exclusive Bits: Three, and is the perfect introduction to this most modest and talented artist. Released as a single in June 2009, with a glorious remix from Ninja monkey boy Bonobo in the can too!!

Stac will also be performing live anywhere that sells alcohol, including The Jazz Cafe and The Vibe Bar in that London. Her biggest influences are Lewis Taylor, Jamie Lidell, Erykah Badu and red wine, all of which (especially the latter) can be heard within the myriad of layers of her off-kilter and highly original soulful sound.

A mix of downtempo attitudes, old fashioned turntablism manners similar as the Smart Blip Experience and hitekk cutting makes it a suitable piece of music, eager to please some more people than just scratch nerds. In the past years, turntablism releases have been a rare form, this crew from Austria’s mountain region Tyrol now contribute a new gem to that genre.

It’s time to refresh the memory!
Quick back on the solo project (with Arto Tunçboyaciyan), largely unknown to my taste, of the leader of “System of a Down” :

• Arto is? :

Arto is a multi-instrumentalist Armenian leader among other of the Armenian Navy Band. Arto has invented a new style of music mixing music and contemporary Armenian folklore: “The Avant-garde Folk” and works with the greatest artists in the world. Arto can be heard on the album Toxicity and Steal This Album! System of a Down.

• The birth of the project :

While Arto part in the recording of Toxicity, it sympathizes with the group and especially Serj. Serj him of his intention to do something different and new. In 2003, when System of a Down pauses, Serj relaunch the project and invite Arto for a week of recording in Los Angeles. “Serart” was born.

• Name :

The name “Serart” is a contraction of “Serj” and “Arto”. Also “Ser” in Armenian means “love”. The title could be translated as “The love of art” or “the art of loving”.

• The album :
  

The album is a total improvisation from the two friends. When recording microphones were opened and each took an instrument or object and tried to get out the best sound. The lyrics were also written on the spot. The disc is very diverse, a real mix of genres (jazz, folk, African music, Asian, rock …), the listener pleasantly lost for lack of benchmarks. The album is amazing and captivating.
Several employees came to the hands-on, one finds for example the work of Sevag (Serj brother), Shavo (as DJ Tactic) or Jenna Ross, beautiful voice of the song “Narina”.
The disc is commercially available with an additional DVD featuring a 14-minute short film “SUN ANGLE CALCULATOR.” The film was directed and edited by Matthew Amato and is a visual collage using pictures of the music CD.
The name “SUN ANGLE CALCULATOR” is Serj as a fun way to say “let me help you see the light.”

• A sequel? :

During the interview we gave special Arto Tunçboyaciyan, we asked whether a sequel was planned in the project. Arto told us that the project was indeed expected, but the busy schedules of Serj himself and did not allow them to enter when they wanted in the studio.

Animalistic is a duo from the Netherlands, consisting of emcees-slash-producers Korhymes and Quincy. Hailing from the city of Utrecht, they create boom bap styled hip hop with strictly English vocals. Often they are associated with the 90′s, which is an evidently good sign in the case of hip hop.
